Why Representation in Dentistry Matters
According to the Journal of American Dental Association, “In 2020, the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute reported that the racial and ethnic mix of the US dentist workforce did not reflect the US population. 1 Only 3.8% of US dentists are Black and 5.9% are Hispanic/Latinx. This disparity was apparent when I was a dental student at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry.” Our own DIDM Advisory Council Member, Dr. Esther Lopez, penned a commentary for JADA, to touch on the impact of the lack of diversity in dentistry and why it is important.
